Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
