A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
